Volleyball team wins a major victory
The Saint Augustine’s University women’s volleyball team continues to excel in the classroom and the court.
The Lady Falcons recently received their plaque for winning the CIAA Highest Grade Point Average (GPA) Award in women’s volleyball for the 2014-15 season. This marks the fourth straight time and the fifth time in six years that the Lady Falcons have earned the league’s top team academic award in their sport.
“I am extremely proud of our volleyball team,” Saint Augustine’s University President Dr. Everett B. Ward said. “Winning the academic award four consecutive years is further evidence that student-athletes are committed to being “scholar-athletes” at Saint Augustine’s University.”
The volleyball team has claimed the award every year since Nikki Bynum Bumpass became the head coach in 2011. Their winning GPA of 3.5 was not only the highest in the CIAA, but topped all athletic teams at Saint Augustine’s University.
“We are honored to win this award for the fourth straight year,” said Bumpass, who guided the Lady Falcons to the CIAA volleyball title in 2011. “These young ladies work diligently to maintain their high GPAs.”
The plaque will be on display at the Prezell R. Robinson Library on campus. Saint Augustine’s University also won the CIAA highest GPA award in baseball, women’s basketball and football for the 2014-15 season. Their plaques will also be in the library display case.
The volleyball team opens the season by hosting the Lady Falcon Challenge at Emery Gymnasium on Friday, September 4, and Saturday, September 5. Six teams including the Lady Falcons will compete in the event.
