Celebrating 150 Years
This year marks a momentous milestone in the history of Saint Augustine’s University as we celebrate 150 years of educating and developing transformative global leaders. Saint Augustine’s University was chartered in 1867 by the Episcopal Church of North Carolina with a mission to provide secondary education to freed slaves. Since then, we have evolved into a four-year liberal arts university servicing the education and growth of sons and daughters of all backgrounds. Founded in faith, Saint Augustine’s University is driven by the potential of every scholar to be transformed into a change agent who excels and leads not only in the classroom, but also in the world.
In honor of this tremendous milestone, the University will host activities throughout the year, beginning with our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Program on Thursday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m. with guest speaker Reverend Dr. Kenneth Ray Hammond. Dr. Hammond has a long-standing background in community service and education, and currently leads Union Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. Our next event, Founder’s Day Convocation, will take place on Thursday, January 26 at 11:00 a.m. with guest speaker Reverend Charles Fischer III. Rev. Fischer is an accomplished scholar and serves as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
Join us during this pivotal moment in time for our beloved University to reflect on our rich history and to look ahead to our promising future. Additionally, please follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as we spend this year celebrating our long-standing history using the hashtag #SAU150.
