Dr. Keith Smith selected as Vice President of Student Affairs for the University

By all accounts – Dr. Keith Smith is a respected and “well-rounded” higher education professional. With over 30 years of experience of higher education leadership, Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) president Dr. Everett B. Ward recently announced the appointment of Smith to the position of Vice President for Student Affairs for the university.

“Dr. Smith brings an extensive background as an administrator, with a focus on student development,” said president Everett B. Ward. “With Dr. Smith’s leadership, I’m confident that the university will continue to elevate the academic and leadership development experience for SAU students.”

Dr. Smith will provide leadership and strategic direction to the admissions team, office of financial aid, residential life, student activities, counseling and health centers, and student judicial hearings. Dr. Smith will also work with the vice president of academic affairs to support the academic mission of the University by providing programs that support student success.

The Goldsboro, N.C. native’s reputation as a transformative leader in higher education is well-known in the state of North Carolina. Dr. Smith recently served as Associate Vice President for Community and Governmental Affairs at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount, N.C. Prior to joining the Nash Community College staff, Dr. Smith previously served as Director of Admissions and Recruitment at Raleigh’s Shaw University. Before transitioning into the higher ed profession, Smith served as a production manager for WFMY-TV in Greensboro, N.C., which he stated was a wonderful experience. But he will tell you that mentoring students is his first passion.

“We must always remember to put our students first,” said Dr. Smith. “I would like to develop an environment where students not only can expect to receive a quality educational experience but should also expect that SAU’s community is just as concerned about providing a safe, nurturing place that promotes personal and professional growth.”

Dr. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in speech and theatre, with a concentration in mass communications and a master’s in education and education media (M.S.) from North Carolina A&T State University; and a Doctor in Higher Education Administration (Ed.D.) from North Carolina State University.
